2006 Kapcsandy Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard Napa Valley
(91% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot and 1% cab franc)
Good deep ruby-red. Captivating aromas of black plum, violet, licorice, coffee, tobacco leaf and dried and fresh herbs. Juicy, sweet and firmly built. An impressively chewy, structured wine with firm acidity and the solid tannic spine of the vintage. But the tannins of this youthfully closed wine are ultimately much more supple than those of the estate cuvee, and here there's considerably more stuffing and depth to the black fruit and licorice flavors. 90-93
2006 Kapcsandy Family Winery Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard Napa Valley
(a 94/6 blend of merlot and cabernet franc)
Good medium ruby-red. Varietally accurate aromas of blackberry, tar, bitter chocolate, graphite and violet. Black fruit and spice flavors are given precision and lift by lively acidity, with an element of dark chocolate adding sex appeal. This has a pliancy in the middle but is nonetheless a very firmly structured merlot-based wine with the backbone for a slow evolution in bottle. 90-93
2006 Kapcsandy Family Winery Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard Napa Valley
(48% each cabernet sauvignon and merlot, with 4% cabernet franc; this cuvee represents a "de-selection," with the objective of making a softer wine with earlier approachability)
Good deep red. Aromas of tobacco, brown spices, licorice and tar. Quite juicy and firm in the mouth, with brisk acidity and spicy oak elements not yet in harmony. Hard to assess in its current form. 88-90
