2016 Rapszodia

The 2016 Rapszodia is 100% Cabernet Franc and if there’s a better expression of this variety in the Valley, I don’t know it. Offering extraordinary aromatics of blue fruits, flowers, wet stone, passion fruits and forest floor, this full-bodied effort has building tannin, perfectly integrated acidity, and a seamless, weightless texture that carries through the finish. It’s as elegant as they come, yet has depth, density and length.

The incredible aromatics of the 2013 Rapszodia give it a singular style – this is as close to perfection as one can get. Representing only 7% of the total production, or 150 cases, this wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot in 2013. Somewhat of an Ausone or Cheval Blanc, depending on your point of view, of southern Napa Valley, the wine offers a dense purple color and a beautiful nose of blueberry and black raspberry fruit and forest floor. It is somewhat light on its feet, with terrific intensity, richness and medium to full body but, again, an almost surreal lightness of being. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.

A great effort and a showcase for Cabernet Franc is the 2012 Rapszodia. This is a blend of 90% Cabernet Franc from the heavy clay soils of their vineyard blended with 10% Merlot aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months and bottled without filtration. A stunning nose of acacia flowers, blueberry liqueur and blackberry is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine that’s amazingly intense, rich and concentrated, but surprisingly light on its feet weight-wise. The wine is full-bodied, but stunningly ethereal and sublime. This is a stunner, and a great example of what Cabernet Franc can do from a terrific terroir, great winemaking and élevage. Sadly, only 175 cases were produced. Look for this wine to continue to drink well for up to two decades.

Sweet tobacco, herbs, mint, licorice, new leather, smoke and incense are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2011 Rapszodia. The 2011 is built in pure elegance and finesse. It doesn’t have the exuberance or power of the 2010, but in exchange the 2011 will be ready to drink much sooner. The silky, gracious finish leaves a lasting impression. In 2011, Rapszodia is 62% Cabernet Franc and 38% Merlot.
